About Newcastle Ocean Baths
Both Newcastle and Merewether are blessed with two ocean bath facilities, which are located on the pristine coastline and are accessible to the community throughout the year. These baths, namely Newcastle Ocean and Merewether Baths, have a rich heritage as well-liked swimming locations. The Newcastle Ocean Baths were established in 1922, while the Merewether Baths were built in 1935.
Throughout the year, we monitor the water quality of four ocean baths: Merewether Main Pool, Merewether Learners Pool, Canoe Pool, and Newcastle Ocean Baths. The cleanliness of these facilities is affected by the temperature and usage of the water. In the summer, the warmer water promotes the growth of algae, leading to an unsightly accumulation on the walls in the splash zone. However, regular testing shows that the water quality is still suitable for public swimming. It is important to mention that the quality of the water is greatly influenced by the natural conditions and debris in the ocean.
What to do at Newcastle Ocean Baths
Council staff work within multiple constraints to maintain a balance between the cleanliness of both Ocean Baths facilities and the need to flush out the pool water. They continuously monitor the water’s cleanliness to ensure it stays at an acceptable level. However, they also face the risk of introducing discoloured water from the ocean. Despite these challenges, the staff strive to achieve a balance between availability and cleanliness.
During the winter, the ‘Merewether Mackerels’, ‘Newcastle Pirates’, and ‘Dixon Park Coldies’ engage in competitive swimming at the Ocean Baths. If you are interested in participating in any of these clubs, kindly reach out to the lifeguard on duty at either Merewether Ocean Baths or Newcastle Ocean Baths for further details.
