The Newcastle Museum, located in the historic Honeysuckle Railway workshops, opened to the community on 4 August 2011. It is not just a reinvention of the original Newcastle Regional Museum but a contemporary and revitalized institution that offers new exhibitions and experiences. The Museum is in the heart of Newcastle and is designed to provide efficient and sustainable services, as well as appealing and accessible programs. It is open from Tuesdays to Sundays, and even during holidays, it remains open seven days a week. The Museum aims to be accessible to as many people as possible, with free entry.

Founded in 1988, the Newcastle Museum was initially situated in the old Castlemaine Brewery building on Hunter Street until 2008. However, it later reopened in 2011 at its current location, 1.7 km (1.1 mi) away, within the former headquarters of the Great Northern Railway. This new location also encompasses the heritage-listed Honeysuckle Point Railway Workshops.
